Get to know the Batucadeiras of “Porto Real” and the Batucadeiras of “Ilha Verde”, two guardians of the Sanzalas and the "Tchabeta" culture.

What "Tchabeta" is

The TCHABETA is a traditional dance from Cape Verde that is very popular on the islands of the archipelago, especially on Santiago and on the island of Principe in “Porto Real”. This dance is accompanied by musical styles such as the FUNANÁ and the BATUKU - two very popular genres that recall the history of resistance and the identity of the Cape Verdean people. The TCHABETA reflects this rhythmic and percussive mix, with beats that invite improvisation and engagement from the participants.

More than just a dance

Lively and full of energy, the TCHABETA is characterized by vibrating hip movements and rhythmic steps, often marked by the closeness between partners.

More than just a dance, the TCHABETA embodies the Cape Verdean spirit, joy and the ability to transform encounters into celebrations of identity and tradition. It is a symbol of liveliness and collective expression, where people come together to share, dance and keep their roots alive.
